Concert Calendar: Psychedelic Furs, the Church, Lake Street Dive, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas, Korn, Rob Zombie, Jeff Beck, Leon Russell and more

Psychedelic Furs, the Church
Almost a year to the day after they appeared at Crossroads KC, post-punk besties Psychedelic Furs and the Church are rolling back into town (stopping at the same venue) for another co-headlining tour. In preparation for what appears to be an annual tradition, might we recommend revisiting the Furs’ essential 1981 album, Talk Talk Talk, which established the British band in the States as one of the pre-eminent voices of the edgy, angsty ’80s? It holds up against anything oozing out of the radio today. When you’re done reliving your youth with “Pretty in Pink,” brush up on the Church’s latest endeavor: 2014’s Further/Deeper, a moody dark horse of a record that proves these Aussies still have more to say.
Friday, August 5
Crossroads KC, 417 E. 18th St.

Lake Street Dive, with  Aoife O’Donovan
There’s something impossibly feel-good about Rachael Price’s voice, even when she’s singing about heartbreak. And there’s no shortage of heartbreak on Side Pony, the latest album from Lake Street Dive — the retro-soul band from Boston that Price has fronted since 2004 — though not a single moment brings you down. This is particularly clear on “Spectacular Failure,” a joyful, horn-filled jig that celebrates the demise of a disappointing relationship. Even down-tempo ballads — see “So Long” — feel warm and familiar, like a vintage quilt you might wrap around yourself on a lonely night. At last, Lake Street Dive seems to be getting the recognition it has so long worked for and deserved. Don’t miss this Friday-night show at the Uptown, and make sure you’re on time for the opener: Americana up-and-comer Aoife O’Donovan.

Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas
Despite the shady tweets and the celebrity drama, Demi Lovato has a voice that demands to be taken seriously. Confident, the bombastic album she released last year to wide acclaim, is proof. On it, Lovato’s voice reaches extraordinary heights; she belts and trills and boasts in ways that she hasn’t been able to before, and that few singers pull off. This talent means that even on record, Lovato is all about drama, with bare-it-all songs that reveal the battle scars beneath the diva armor. Saturday at the Sprint Center, feel Lovato’s newfound power — and get a look at her former Disney prisoner (and boyfriend) Nick Jonas.
