Concert Calendar: Prophets of Rage, Awolnation, Kauffman Center Turns Five, Delta Rae and more

Prophets of Rage and Awolnation
If 2016 has disappointed you so far — and if you’re bracing yourself against the madness that creeps ever closer as the presidential election looms in November — Prophets of Rage is the show for you. It’s going to be a very loud Monday night as the newly formed supergroup — blending Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and DJ Lord and Cypress Hill’s B-Real — takes over Providence. There has never been a more appropriate time for ageless gems such as “Bulls on Parade” and “Killing in the Name.” Monday night, join the movement to make America rage again. Awolnation opens.
Monday, September 5
Providence Medical Center Amphitheater, 633 North 130th Street, Bonner Springs

Kauffman Center Turns Five, Live
On First Friday in the Crossroads, help the Kauffman Center celebrate five years with a birthday bash that will put all your My Little Pony-themed childhood parties to shame. There’s something for everyone at this shindig, starting with crowd-pleasing lawn games and a cake-decorating contest. This is also a unique bundling of some of the metro’s premier performers: the Kansas City Ballet Second Company, a Kansas City Symphony Chamber Ensemble, and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City Resident and Young Artists each take a turn. The classical is interspersed with the new-fashioned at this event, with local musicians dotting the bill including singer-songwriter Jessica Paige and Americana rock ensemble the Grisly Hand. Power-pop group Hembree is on deck, as well as funky party masters the Phantastics. The night ends with a fireworks display. Entry is free; food and drink will be available for purchase.

Delta Rae
Katy Guillen and the Girls, the Church Sisters

When Delta Rae made its 2012 debut, the Durham, North Carolina, sextet showed off some smart instincts for Americana — including the vocal harmonies of siblings Ian Hölljes, Eric Hölljes and Brittany Hölljes, and Elizabeth Hopkins’ way with a crescendo. On Delta Rae’s newest album, After It All, those stellar vocal harmonies are still a focal point, but the band reaches a little more here for influences beyond the folk flair it nailed with its first record. Roots, blues, gospel, rock, and even the odd piano ballad show up here; it’s not always a cohesive album, but it’s definitely a good time. Award-winning local blues trio Katy Guillen and the Girls is also on deck this evening, as well as country duo the Church Sisters.
