Concert Calendar: Frightened Rabbit, Crossroads Music Fest, Gary Clark Jr., Tegan & Sara, Bob Mould and more
Frightened Rabbit
Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison is kind
of your archetypical tortured artist. On the Glasgow band’s latest
album, Painting of a Panic Attack, he mines the well-trod themes of
heartbreak and depression. Instead of being trapped in his own
self-pity, Hutchison addresses his own faults. There are some
self-indulgent moments, but overall, Painting of a Panic Attack reads
more like a stirring elegy than it does gloomy synth-folk — particularly
with the gorgeous album closer, “Die Like a Rich Boy,” in which
Hutchison breathily declares that he wants “to die like a rich boy in a
lake that bears my name.” Friday night at the Granada, keep Hutchison’s
misery company.

Crossroads Music Fest
Every year, Bill Sundahl, special-events and volunteer coordinator for community-radio station KKFI 90.1, makes improvements to his beloved Crossroads Music Fest. On Saturday, the 12th annual iteration of CMF spreads out over nine venues: RecordBar (at its new 1520 Grand location), Collection, Green Lady Lounge, two stages at the Living Room Theatre, the Brick, Tank Room, Mod Gallery and Good Golly (Josey Records is sponsoring the VIP area there). More than 40 artists and bands have signed up for this year’s fest, including Radkey, Kelley Hunt, Various Blonde, the Amanda Fish Band, Not a Planet, Heidi Lynne Gluck and Molly Hammer. If you want a rich sampling of local music talent, here is your chance to access a multitude of genres with a short walk through the Crossroads.

Gary Clark Jr.
Gary Clark Jr. was last in town in March, when he played to an enthusiastic crowd at the Uptown. He’s back five months later, this time at Crossroads KC, still touring on last year’s excellent The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing what Clark can do in concert, don’t miss this chance. Clark owns whatever stage he’s on like he’s just risen from the ashes of Jimi Hendrix. On Sonny Boy, the Austin, Texas, axman moves beyond the blues, incorporating elements of 1970s funk and soul. If you’re looking for a weeknight party, friends, this is it.
