Drive-By Truckers
Son Volt
Drive-By Truckers is inviting controversy with its forthcoming record, American Band, out September 30. To be honest, it’s a perfect year for it. The Georgia band celebrates two decades together, and perhaps to honor the coincidence that such a milestone is achieved during one of the most polarizing election years in history, this album encompasses themes of police brutality, racism, crooked politics and the Confederate flag. On the cover of the album? The American flag, flying in distress, upside-down at half-staff.
7 p.m. Friday, September 23
Crossroads KC, 417 E. 18th St.

Leon Bridges
with Lianne La Havas
It was a swinging retro record — Coming Home, released last year — that earned Leon Bridges comparisons to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding … as well as a Grammy nomination. The 27-year-old artist sounds like he just stepped out of a jukebox wearing a polyester mock-neck and crooning smoothly into an old-fashioned microphone. It’s a sound that’s hard not to like, even if you think you’re too cool to ride the soul revival train. British songbird Lianne La Havas opens, and if you haven’t yet been charmed by the smoke-and-ashes singing that dominated her last record, Blood, just wait.
8 p.m. Tuesday, September 27
Uptown Theater, 3700 Broadway

Amos Lee
On his latest album, Spirit, Amos Lee gambles with some new sounds, and it pays off big time. His genre has always been Americana, and it’s always worked for him — the tried-and-true dusty dirges, the warm familiarity of denim-on-denim-inspired melodies. But Spirit welcomes a bright horn section and folds in some gospel, and my goodness, it feels so natural that we wonder why Lee is just now getting around to letting these other colors shine. Perhaps these touches have always been there, subtly flavoring his grooves. Whatever the case, Spirit takes us higher.
