Concert Calendar: Chance the Rapper, Tycho, Cyndi Lauper, Death Cab for Cutie, Ray LaMontagne and more
Chance the Rapper
Everything Chance the Rapper touches seems to turn to gold, and his latest release, Coloring Book, is no exception. A hopeful hip-hop album with complex biblical themes, gospel overtures and a healthy amount of cursing, it establishes Chance — born Chancelor Bennett in Chicago 23 years ago — as one of rap’s most authoritative and promising new voices. Most of Chance’s messaging zeroes in on his clear-eyed and positive relationship with the big guy upstairs. The resounding critical acclaim Coloring Book has been met with is even more impressive considering Chance’s resolution to eschew label representation.

Tycho
Every Tycho album feels as though it has been composed for a dream. When Awake was released, in 2014, it seemed like mastermind Scott Hansen — the San Francisco artist behind the Tycho name — had a destination in mind for the sonic journey he was embarking on, with a few notable detours to beloved landmarks via rainbow-colored harmonies and diamond-crusted synths. Awake was transportive, remarkable not only for the effect it had on the listener but for the manner in which Hansen achieved it, with big, breathable percussion and textured layers of ambiance. We should have a new full-length from Tycho this year; perhaps Sunday at the Uptown, we’ll get a taste of what’s to come.
8 p.m. Sunday, September 18
Uptown Theater, 3700 Broadway

Cyndi Lauper
More than 30 years since her Grammy Award-winning debut, She’s So Unusual, Cyndi Lauper shows no signs of slowing down. Thursday night at the Uptown, you’re just as likely to relive Lauper’s best-loved classics — “Time After Time,” “True Colors,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” — as you are cuts from her hit 2013 Broadway musical, Kinky Boots. At 63, Lauper decided to try new tricks with Detour, an album of classic-country covers. It’s refreshing and a bit surreal to hear Lauper’s voice taking turns on tunes like “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “I Fall to Pieces,” but it just goes to show that there’s no end to her colorful catalog.
