Concert Calendar: Brian Wilson, Weezer, Panic at the Disco, Chris Isaak, Alabama Shakes, Kiss, Cage the Elephant and more

Brian Wilson
Even a passive Beach Boys fan will have a hard time denying the holiness of Pet Sounds. Wednesday at the Kauffman Center, you have a chance to hear that album live in its entirety, performed by Beach Boys founding member and iconic pop mastermind Brian Wilson (with the help of an all-star band that includes former Beach Boys Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin). Wilson is 74, and there is a sense of finality around this 50th-anniversary Pet Sounds tour, so don’t sleep on this show.
Wednesday, July 20
Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, 1601 Broadway

Weezer, Panic at the Disco
If you miss the early aughts as much as you miss fashionable fedoras and Livestrong bracelets, boy, is there a show for you. Weezer is in town Wednesday in support of its latest self-titled release, which keeps reaching for the glory of the 2000s, and achieves it to a certain extent. Longtime fans will find a lot to love. Panic at the Disco joins this tour in support of Death of a Bachelor. Panic at the Disco is just founding member Brendon Urie these days, and this album sounds like his effort to age up the band’s sound without losing too much of what defines it — namely, his skill for theatrical power-pop. If you want to remember who you were 15 years ago, Wednesday night might be all you need. Show up early for opener Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness.
Wednesday, July 20
Starlight Theatre, 4600 Starlight Rd.

Chris Isaak
There is no mistaking Chris Isaak’s voice: His echoing falsetto sloping down the chorus of his 1991 hit “Wicked Game,” and his booming, bottom-of-the-barrel tenor following the bass line on “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing” are as distinctive as the particular sentiment of Americana those songs evoke. Isaak has taught us to expect such talents from him over the course of his four-decade career, and on his latest release, First Comes the Night, he delivers — albeit in a slightly different way. First Comes the Night still has licks of Isaak’s Roy Orbison–inspired vintage rockabilly, but it seems that the years (Isaak turned 60 in June) have given him a little more to be bitter about. “Down in Flames” and “The Way Things Really Are” are far more delicate and nuanced than mere angst. Wednesday night, let this crooner soothe your soul.
