Clothes Whores: Enthusiastically examining Kansas City’s sartorial shenanigans

A million years ago (or in 2005, which is the same thing), I wrote about a “precious snowflake” of a guy named Ricardo Mejia. Back then, he was showing off his muscular legs beneath cheerleading skirts while dancing enthusiastically at the Hurricane, earning the role as the bar’s unofficial mascot.

Mejia has since relocated his act to the Record Bar, where he’s captured the hearts of some new fans: Colin Walsh and Brian Stokes of the up-and-coming graphic design firm Trick Pony Studio.

Walsh, 30, and Stokes, 35, met four years ago as designers at Hallmark, where they often talked about creating t-shirts together. Mejia made an easy muse for a debut shirt, according to Walsh, who, like Mejia, has a gym membership at Scott Fitness.

“I’ve seen Ricardo around town for the last couple of years … dancing in tiny shorts,” Walsh writes via e-mail. “I was recently introduced to him by (Scott Fitness co-owner) John Scott and took a bunch of goofy photos and video. He’s super rad and has become a Kansas City icon.”
