The Kansas City City Council approved an ordinance yesterday that requires protestors to be at least 300 feet from a funeral or burial service. The language of the new law matches that of a funeral picketing ordinance in Manchester, Missouri, which the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently upheld as constitutional.

While the ordinance covers all protestors, the intent was certainly to limit the activities of the Westboro Baptist Church. The ban begins an hour before a service begins at a funeral home, cemetery or house of worship and lasts until an hour after the service is complete. The new ordinance goes into effect November 11.
