Chug-a-Lug

“Respect beer” is the mantra of BeerAdvocate magazine and beeradvocate.com. To keep the drunk-asshole level in check, the website promotes simple rules for enjoying the world’s most consumed social lubricant: First, keep it real — no beer snobbery; second, appreciate what you are drinking; finally, drink responsibly — meaning, drink less, drink better and stay hydrated. Practice these simple, essential points at KC Hop Fest 2011, a bountiful suds festival in Waldo, one block east of the Well (207 West 74th Street). Featuring more than 50 breweries (Ska Brewing Co., Deschutes Brewery and Firestone Walker Brewing Co., to name just a few) and more than 200 selections, this beernanza goes from 1 to 5 p.m. “There will be a ton of Belgian breweries represented there in the form of product,” says Jon Poteet, director of marketing for Central States Beverage Co. “They will be new to the KC market, and they’ll probably never be sampled again by anyone around here, unless they go to Belgium.” Regular admission costs $30, with VIP admission (which gets you in an hour early) at $50; buy tickets at Lew’s Grill and Bar (7539 Wornall, 816-444-8080) or the Well (7421 Broadway, 816-361-1700).
