Chiefs flush 47 percent of ’08 roster

“Be a pro,” former Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards liked to say. But it’s hard to be a professional football player when a team coming off of a dreadful season thinks you can’t play.

The Chiefs cut down the roster to 53 players on Friday. Among those to feel the ax on their thick necks were 2008 starters Damion McIntosh and Bernard Pollard.

New coach Todd Haley will lead a team on Sunday that looks very different than the one the Chiefs sent into a battle when the games counted last. Of the 53 players on the roster for the ’08 season finale, 25 are no longer with the team. Churn, baby, churn!

Ol’ Herm didn’t anticipate this kind of turnover. Before the final loss of the ’08 season, Edwards went into baffler mode and announced that the roster was 85 percent rebuilt.

Edwards, we suspected then and know now for sure, was either lying or such a poor talent evaluator that he may not be fit for work as a commentator, a job with less than rigorous standards.
