Chely Wright

August 3 is a big day for Chely Wright. That evening she’s singing at the Douglas County Fair (a good place for those looking to travel back in time a few decades) for her first hometown concert in five years. Perhaps more important, she’ll be in Wellsville, Kansas (nine miles from Lawrence), for the renaming of Wellsville’s Main Street as “Chely Wright Way.” Wellsville has a lot to be proud of — for that matter, so does Wright. Her songs, especially the cuts that didn’t make it as singles, still hold a lot of small-town Kansas heat. Though the stay-away-from-my man single “Jezebel” and the catchy “Single White Female” are perfect for Young Country fans, here’s hoping she digs a little deeper for songs such as “One Night in Las Vegas,” a clever reflection on life’s crappy moments and their mirror opposites.
