Charity Scares

The kid-friendly North Kansas City Haunted House (830 East 21st Street) has been haunted this year by the spooky economic collapse. Organizer Shannon Cousins says, “We’re running into a few minor issues getting supplies we need. We’ve been reaching out to community organizations for monetary donations to get supplies we need. Fox News came and did a 30-second segment about it, but it didn’t get us exactly the attention we’re looking for. A couple of not-for-profits in their own financial distress — the Jaycees and the Gladstone Oddfellows — have been trying to help as much as they can.” Still, Cousins insists the house will be open at 7 p.m. today (and Friday night at the same time). “This year, we thought we’d help out some charitable organizations via donations — we’re asking people to bring non-perishable items and money to help out families in need. We help three or four families on thanksgiving, three or four families on Christmas. Any leftovers will go to Harvesters.”
