Camp Zoe, former home to hippie jam fest Schwagstock, will become a Missouri state park

  • Heady times in southern Missouri are no more.

Back in 2010, federal agents swarmed and seized Camp Zoe, a 352-acre patch of campground in southern Missouri owned by Jimmy Tebeau. The feds claimed that the weekend festivals Tebeau hosted on the property, such as Schwagstock, doubled as a massive open-air drug market. Prosecutors later alleged that drug dealers sold somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000 worth of weed, pills, and every psychedelic drug under the sun during Tebeau’s various festivals.

Tebeau, the former frontman of Grateful Dead tribute act the Schwag, is currently serving a 30-month sentence up in a South Dakota federal prison, for maintaining drug-involved premises. And yesterday, his old property was sold to the state of Missouri.

The site – which was purchased for $640,000 by the state at an online auction – will become a state park.

In a news release, Bill Bryan, director of Missouri State Parks, said, “This Ozark gem showcases beautiful natural resources, including Sinking Creek near its confluence with the Current River. Its location near Current River State Park and minutes away from the beloved Montauk State Park will provide visitors great opportunities to enhance their Missouri State Parks experience in the Ozarks.”

You know what would really enhance that outdoor experience? Ah, nevermind.
