After eight years of raucous sing-alongs, jumping-box-related mayhem and orchestrated chaos of all sorts, the Lawrence/Kansas City institution known as the Short Bus Kids will soon be no more. Drummer Bill Kill and bassist Tyler (or “Hife”) are moving far away from the banks of the group’s beloved Wakarusa, and the band has decided to retire its name. (This news will surely come as a relief to ultra-p.c. punks Harum Scarum, who made a stink about the Kids’ “offensive” moniker during a show the bands played together this spring.) While this show is in some ways a sad farewell, it’s not a funeral. The remaining members — guitarist/vocalist Mike, singer/dancer AnDIY and guitarist Joe — plan to keep the crew’s impressive catalog of smart, thrashy songs alive. The new ensemble, possibly bolstered by drummer Kurt from The Syndicate and bassist Dylan from Aberrant, will inherit the Kids’ proudest possession — a little yellow tour bus (pictured). And for anyone still feeling down about the demise of one of the area’s most enduring brand names, Soophie Nun Squad should lighten the mood with a set that invariably becomes an irrepressible punk/funk party.
