Buy a turntable, atone for Sam Brownback

Thousands of vinyl records and CDs, along with vintage and modern audio equipment, await music lovers at Audio-Reader’s annual sale, For Your Ears Only, on Friday and Saturday in Lawrence. Now in its 14th year, the sale benefits the reading and information service for those who cannot read the printed word.

The Audio-Reader Network is a public service of the University of Kansas. As such, it has to absorb budget cuts ordered by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback. Last month, KU officials announced that Audio-Reader and Kansas Public Radio would each lose $100,000 as part of a $7 million university-wide reduction.

The sale arrives as Kansans further grasp the idea that putting Brownback in charge of the state’s economy was unwise. Even Republicans now say they’re disenchanted with the governor, who pushed for aggressive tax cuts that have contributed to unbalanced budgets.

For Your Ears Only presents an opportunity to make amends for voting for Brownback or not doing enough to stop others from doing so. Audio-Reader needs the money. And maybe you need a gently used Pioneer SX-750 receiver.

The sale runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper Street, Building No. 21. Admission is free on Saturday.
