Buckethead

It’s almost absurd that Axl Rose’s stage antics — old hat by now — overshadowed the fact that he replaced Slash with a man wearing an unadorned Kabuki-style mask and a KFC bucket on his head. But Buckethead is best-known for his almost absurdly complex, innovative guitar work. Since playing with Guns N’ Roses, Buckethead has toured with a bassist and drummer, but recently he has performed solo with an iPod. And his ridiculously long fingers work the frets with astonishing dexterity. The attendant mask and oddball headgear (now without the KFC logo) are by no means the guitarist’s focal point. His genre-hopping, description-defying instrumental musicianship attracts metalheads and hippies alike, tiptoeing between wailing rock solos and hypnotic, jammy loops.
