Bring Sheet Music

Despite the perfectly respectable name, there’s always something a little rambunctious about Musical Theater Heritage, stager of such recent hits as The Pajama Game and Spectacular Christmas. MTH has a history of lunging over the top, but nothing matches the wildness that Tim Scott promises for Musical Mondays, the new series of nightclub-style shows debuting at 7:30 p.m. at Crown Center’s Off Center Theatre (2450 Grand). “I think it’ll be Quality Hill-style cabaret meets the Red Balloon,” Scott jokes, referring to the notorious, anything-goes karaoke bar — the kind of place where you get your ass kicked if you sing “Anything Goes.” You might recognize emcee Scott from his between-innings banter on the Royals’ Diamond Vision. As coordinator of this weekly extravaganza, he promises a relaxed feel, cocktails, local stars and a sense of “mischief and unpredictability.” Tonight’s lineup boasts Lauren Braton, Seth Golay, Jessalyn Kincaid and Nathan Granner. But Scott is also looking for discoveries: Singers arriving with sheet music (and without a request for the pianist to transpose keys) are spared the $10 admission. “I really hope that the younger singers in town come out and take advantage of the opportunity to sing. Too often, these kids get overlooked because no one knows them and they only get to sing 16 bars at an audition,” he says. Call 816-221-6987 for more information or see musicaltheaterheritage.com.
