Border War at the Bar

When word surfaced that the annual football rivalry between the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri would play out this year and next at Arrowhead Stadium (1 Arrowhead Drive, 816-920-9400), factions from Lawrence and Columbia kicked and screamed over projected lost revenue for local businesses. The Red Lyon Tavern — a popular game-day spot on Massachusetts in Lawrence — even went so far as to offer discounts to fans who showed unused game tickets. But that promotion will likely fall flat, given that tickets to the sold-out game are now fetching hundreds of dollars in the wake of monster seasons from both teams. The fever-pitch hype for the regular-season finale today between 10-0 KU and 9-1 MU is prompting local establishments to step up their games as well. Davey’s Uptown (3402 Main, 816-753-1909) is offering free food, and Bigg’s Barbeque in Lawrence (2429 Iowa, 785-856-2550) is chartering a bus to Arrowhead. The biggest screens in KC can be found at the 810 Zone on the Country Club Plaza (4686 Broadway, 816-268-9663), and the biggest pro-blue contingent is likely to flare up at Jaywalkers near KU Med (3916 Rainbow in KCK, 913-671-7464).
