Blue Eyed Dog
Columbia, Missouri’s Blue Eyed Dog plays an angst-free brand of grunge. It maintains the musical staples of the genre — the fuzzy distorted riffs, the midsong guitar solos wafting over a steady bass line and a rumbling drum beat — but singer/guitarist Byron Neighbors communicates his lyrics without a hint of dread. When he sings You will never love me the way that I will love you, he sounds resigned, even accepting. When he admits My dreams are dead like those people in the ground, his words are delivered without self-pity or irony. In addition to its refreshingly earnest vocals, Blue Eyed Dog distinguishes itself from the minimalist grunge pack with the presence of a rhythm guitarist, who adds intriguing melody lines to the group’s hard-driving tunes.
