Blooming Flours

Eat your heart out, Betty Crocker. Kansas City ’s mad cake scientist, Mike Elder, is hosting Icing on the Cake, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel (6100 College Boulevard, in Overland Park). It’s a benefit for Newhouse, which offers shelter and services to victims of domestic violence. Beginning at 10 a.m., the cake- and sugar-art exhibition opens, allowing expogoers to discover that art can be delicious without being pretentious. At 5 p.m., the fondant will fly as four of the country’ s best bakers — Brian Stevens (TLC’s Next Great Baker), Debbie Goard (Food Network Challenge), and Ruth Rickey and Bob Brougham (TLC’s Ultimate Cake-Off) — lead teams in a live cake-decorating competition. Serving as judges: Mike Elder, KSHB Channel 41 morning news anchor Curtis Jay, and The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza. Tickets for the exhibition cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. You can attend both the exhibition and the cake challenge for $35. For tickets and information, see newhouseshelter.org.
