Bill Kurtis’ son found dead on the newsman’s Kansas cattle ranch

The son of legendary Chicago newsman Bill Kurtis was found dead at Kurtis’ cattle ranch in Sedan, Kansas

A report in the Chicago Tribune says 38-year-old Scott Kurtis had suffered from paranoid schizophrenia since his teens. It’s a really sad story, and Scott Kurtis’ stepmother,  Donna LaPietra, tells the story of a man with mental illness living a lonely life.

“Quite frankly, there’s not very much anyone can do so he struggled with that illness and various complications that arise from it,” said LaPietra. “Tragically Bill and I have known for a while that often … schizophrenics do not live past the age of 40. It was something we always had in the back of our minds and Scott really struggled.”

An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.
