Bill Goffrier at the Replay, April 23

While the name Bill Goffrier might not immediately mean anything to you, the names of the bands the man has been involved with certainly will. He was not only in the Embarrassment, but he also went on to front Big Dipper.

If there were ever a band from this area to have impact on a national scale, the Embarrassment would be it (yes, even more than Kansas). They’ve been name-checked by R.E.M., and their albums go for ridiculous amounts of money on eBay (seriously, the “Sex Drive” single regularly fetches over $100).

Both the Embos and Big Dipper songs are the sort of stuff of which college radio was made — jangly guitars, heartfelt vocals, and a resilient desire to play music that was not only different, but catchy and tuneful in its own weird way. For those of you who were unable to attend the Embarrassment reunion show at Liberty Hall a few years back, this is the next best thing, and a rare opportunity to see a local legend in an intimate setting.

The show is Friday, April 23, and is all ages. It’s an early show, as well, starting at 6:00 p.m. The Danny Pound Band opens, which makes this a fine value for your $5 admission.
