Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys

Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys meet their audience more than halfway. For instance, faced stage-right with slurred shout-outs for the deliriously obscene “Back Door Dan,” a crowd favorite, and, stage left, a table of children in the house with their parents, Sandy (born Robert Williams) is the kind of guy who’ll wink, happily promise the dirty version for the second set, then launch into the deliriously funny “kid-friendly” version as an appetizer. One of the last bands standing from the Western swing revival (and always the best instrumentalists of the bunch), these boys are still capturing sounds of a bygone era. Their ability to swing through rockabilly, honky tonk, country boogie and even a ’40s-style ballad always grabs the attention of a crowd ready to dance. The individual members’ ability to be themselves, even inside suits that match so closely they even have the same buttons, has to be the key to their longevity.
