Earlier this month, we published The Pitch’s annual Best of Kansas City issue. You can take a peek at the results of the readers’ poll here. The issue also included a list, compiled and written by our editorial staff, of some local people, places, and things that we think make 2026 KC life feel like a winner. We’ll be publishing these online throughout June and July.

While the distinction between a dive and regular bar is razor-thin, we’ll stick with the one that keeps “dive” in the name: The Hi-Dive Lounge on 39th Street. Whether it’s admiring the graffiti on the walls around the urinal or shooting the shit with one of the locals, you are bound to have a memorable time.

Not sure what to order? The mystery beers take care of that for you. The bartender presses a button on a vintage vending machine that holds a variety of gas station’s finest (or a surprise slam dunk). Meanwhile, the kitchen will level up your visit with legitimately delicious meatloaf and burgers.

Then, sit by a well-aged, seasoned local and ask how many Chiefs quarterbacks they can name—wow, Warren Moon started a game for them? Keep the lore coming. Since the national consensus became “I hate the Chiefs,” this may give you a deeper appreciation of the previous 30 years of misery. Better to learn with a mystery beer in hand, too.
