Earlier this month, we published The Pitch’s annual Best of Kansas City issue. You can take a peek at the results of the readers’ poll here. The issue also included a list, compiled and written by our editorial staff, of some local people, places, and things that we think make 2026 KC life feel like a winner. We’ll be publishing these online throughout June and July.

They don’t call Kansas City the “Paris of the Plains” for nothing. A Parisian aura of romance surrounds our quaint coffeehouses and limestone bluffs. One moment you can wander, starry-eyed, beneath the Eiffel Tower-sized KCTV communications tower; the next, you can stare at the love of your life through a cafe window.

I speak from pure experience. My soulmate was a cafe worker: beautiful orange hair, playful winks, and a furry tail.

Yes, my heart was stolen at Whiskers Cat Cafe & Coffeehouse. Unlike the typical coffee shop, though, you are encouraged to take these eligible bachelors home. As the name implies, Whiskers is filled with farm-to-lap cats sourced from local shelters and feline rescues. And, it might be the best spot to get some work done while surrounded by like-minded intellectuals.
