Belle of the Hedge Ball
Though autumn ushers in handsome hues of yellow and red, it also decays the fruits of spring’s labors. Many yards become overornamented with tree droppings. Most beleaguered are those living under or near trees losing hedge apples (or hedge balls), which can easily bruise a noggin or scar a lawnmower’s blade. Help control the fruit population today at Eureka’s third-annual Hedge Ball Chuckin’ event at the Flint Hills Family Camp (1264 M50 Road in Eureka, Kansas). Paid entrants will launch intact hedge balls as far as possible to claim victory and collect a cash prize. The categories of competition include air cannon, mechanical cannon and youth air cannon. Competitors must be at least 18 for the adult portion or between 11 and 17 to participate in the youth class. The chuckin’ starts at 9 a.m. The event is entirely BYOH — bring your own hedge apples.
