Behind the Red Door

Facing a rent increase in her basement studio, transplanted Syracuse, New York, artist Lacey Lewis needed to find a new place to paint. The challenge: Stay true to her adopted home of Kansas City, Kansas, and maybe find room for others to work, too. The result: Red Door Studios, opening today at 738 Armstrong in KCK (913-909-5408; look for — what else? — the bright-red door). After the 4:45 p.m. ribbon-cutting, the launch party lasts until 8 and includes music by Clay Hughes and a “Madam Meprise” performance by Betsy Barratt. Besides her own oil portraits, Lewis’ Second Friday show includes works by Steve Curtis, Antonette Nicotera, Stacy Miller and several other artists. See for details.
