Behind the Red Door

Facing a rent increase in her basement studio, transplanted Syracuse, New York, artist Lacey Lewis needed to find a new place to paint. The challenge: Stay true to her adopted home of Kansas City, Kansas, and maybe find room for others to work, too. The result: Red Door Studios, opening today at 738 Armstrong in KCK (913-909-5408; look for — what else? — the bright-red door). After the 4:45 p.m. ribbon-cutting, the launch party lasts until 8 and includes music by Clay Hughes and a “Madam Meprise” performance by Betsy Barratt. Besides her own oil portraits, Lewis’ Second Friday show includes works by Steve Curtis, Antonette Nicotera, Stacy Miller and several other artists. See reddoorstudios.lacey-lewis.com for details.
