Beeeeeeez!

Remember The Swarm? And remember how worried we got about killer bees invading America, devouring entire communities and carrying off small children? Well, it turns out that the greatest thing we have to fear from bees is their extinction. Ninety years ago, the Austrian scientist Rudolf Steiner predicted colony collapse disorder, and it’s happening right on schedule. But we were so freaked out by Irwin Allen disaster epics, we were blindsided. A more levelheaded approach to our millennia-spanning but increasingly precarious coexistence with our little pollinating friends is found in Taggart Siegel’s 2010 documentary Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us? Co-sponsored by the KC Center for Urban Agriculture, the film screens at 7 p.m. as part of the All Souls Documentary Series at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church (4501 Walnut, 816-531-2131). Admission is free. For more
