Beatbox: VG

For many politicians, pundits and bareheaded militia members, the U.S.-Mexico border is a scary place. They fear that there is something potentially Bolshevik about the influx of Mexican imports — whether people, drugs or culture — slipping by unnoticed to American turf. For xenophobes, Supa Bad, the second from Vincent Galicia (who traffics beats as VG), is a perfect dystopia. VG powers through sexed-up, mainstream pop anthems, R&B and hip-hop, topping all of it off with heavy Latin flavors like hot sauce with the lid off. Salsa-layered hip-hop beats, Spanish rap — he Chicanofies any American pop sound he can get his hands on. With songs such as “Physical Attraction” and “Move Ya Body,” VG makes few moves toward emotional complexity. Minus a few detours toward gangster seriousness — lyrically facilitated by VG’s MC sideman, C Los — Supa Bad is a boot knocker’s anthem to boot knocking. Even the sparkling production gyrates. Minutemen, be warned: Supa Bad just might reproduce.
