Beach Blanket Bingo

In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration suggested capping SPF (sun protection factor) levels at 50 and above. Given that these are determined by comparing the time it takes to burn without sunscreen with the time it takes to burn with it, it’s probably OK to assume that sunscreen between SPF 50 and SPF 100 is pretty much a marketing ploy. But we still advise slathering up this summer, especially while visiting the Jackson County beaches, which are now open through September 5. Admission to both Longview Lake Beach (11101 Raytown Road) and Blue Springs Lake Beach (1500 Northeast Bowlin Road, in Lee’s Summit) is $5 for adults (16 and over) and $3 for kids (15 and under). Both have sand volleyball courts, shower facilities, and an acre of protected designated swimming. For more information, call 816-503-4876 or see jacksongov.org/beaches.
