Be Thankful

Hard to believe that just 89 years ago, Americans lacking Y chromosomes couldn’t vote. Through dedicated protest, however, feisty suffragists changed that. The government granted women the right to vote in August 1920; 51 years later, Women’s Equality Day was founded. Honor the not-well-enough-known holiday by attending the Women’s Equality Day Fair from 5 to 9 p.m. today. Festivities in Washington Square Park across from the Westin Crown Center (Grand Boulevard and Pershing Road) celebrate the artistic, commercial, political and social accomplishments of local women. Expect informational booths and musical performances. E-mail info@wipfunds.com for more information. Also happening on this major day in women’s history: “Women, Girls, Ladies: Continuing the Conversation,” a free 6:30 p.m. panel discussion at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (4801 Main). Call 816-701-3407 to RSVP.
