Bachelorette

In an electronic age, it’s always nice to see technology being put to good use. In the case of Bachelorette, leader and sole core band member Annabel Alpers not only has found comfort in going electronic but also has made some hauntingly beautiful synth-pop melodies, enhancing the standard guitar-bass-drums setup with computer-based compositions. Instead of going solo with her latest album, as she did on 2005’s The End of Things, the New Zealand singer-songwriter has opted to bring in a few friends to help lug the computer monitors and mismatched instruments on her current 32-show U.S. tour, taking Bachelorette from solo to band status. Though, thematically, her latest album, My Electric Family, takes on humankind’s marriage to the electronic world, it’s hard not to see even the worst aspects of a technological society through rosy, pop-tinted glasses when Annabel is in charge.
