Autolux

Autolux’s debut, 2004’s Future Perfect, arrived far enough ahead of the current neo-psych groundswell to be a trendsetter, and its long-awaited follow-up, Transit Transit, is intriguing enough to spotlight on the trend’s way out. Whereas Future was all swelling distortion punctuated by ferocious thumps, the new effort scales back the fuzz. The result is like a loft with exposed beams and pipes: spacious and industrial. Dreamy falsettos drift over earthy percussion, spiked with guitar squalls. The Sonic Youth-inspired dissonance of guitarist Greg Edwards dovetails with the ethereal vocals of Eugene Goreshter and Carla Azar, giving the band’s arrangements a richer, wider spectrum. Opener Gold Panda combines throttling breakbeats with sputtering ambient shimmer that’s reminiscent of Four Tet.
