As Tall As Lions

Art rock’s two elements are rarely in balance and often result in music best suited for someone’s mantel. True to this form, As Tall as Lions’ richly textured third album, You Can’t Take It With You, initially seems like it belongs on a shelf. Keyboards cast shimmering backdrops, guitars drizzle with brief bursts of lightning, and horns sprout periodically like undergrowth. Singer and guitarist Dan Nigro’s soulful croon, deep as the night sky, reigns over it all. The band’s glimmering atmospherics would drift aimlessly if they weren’t yoked to vigorous percussion. Inspired by the thumping Brazilian theater spectacle Fuerzabruta, the album comes alive onstage, adding a rock pulse to the quartet’s stirring sonic sculptures.
