Army confirms disturbing suicide rate

As promised earlier, here’s the Army’s official release confirming reports that the number of solider suicides reached a three-decade high in 2008.

“We want the families who have lost loved ones to suicide to understand how deeply we feel their loss and that we are committed to doing everything possible to prevent this tragedy in our Army,” Secretary of the Army Pete Geren (pictured) said in a statement.

In response, the Army is instituting a 30-day “stand-down” to increase training within its ranks to identify soldiers in distress.
