Ambiguous Moves

If you’re not quite sure what modern dance is, think of it in terms of different painting styles. There’s realism, in which the subjects look as they appear in life, and then there’s abstract expression and surrealism, in which the artist takes a free hand to subjects. Modern dance is like the latter: open to interpretation. See the concepts of nine area choreographers at the seventh-annual A Modern Night at the Folly, a showcase presented by City in Motion Dance Theater. The program offers a wide representation of modern dance, with pieces ranging from the humorous to the dramatic. It starts at 8 p.m. at the Folly Theater (300 West 12th Street). Tickets cost $18 in advance, $20 at the door, and $15 for students and seniors; call 816-474-4444.
