Janis Ian at 8 p.m. in the Carlsen Center’s Polsky Theatre at Johnson County Community College (12345 College Boulevard, Overland Park). Wait — 17? Make that 15. That’s how old Ian was when she released “Society’s Child.” After that, her life had its ups and downs until 1975, when “At Seventeen” earned her a Grammy. In 1993, Ian came out, on a couple of levels, with her album Breaking Silence. And she recently was nominated for a Rhysling Award from the Science Fiction Poetry Association for “Welcome Home (The Nebulas Song),” sung to the tune of “At Seventeen.” Excerpt: I learned the truth at 17/That Asimov and Bradbury/And Clarke were alphabetically/My very perfect A-B-C. Tickets cost $35; call 913-469-4445 or see jccc.edu/theseries.
