Against the sky

Sherry Leedy, of Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art (2004 Baltimore, 816-221-2626), is the first person to tell you that Third Friday isn’t First Friday in terms of gallery attendance. “It’s much more intimate. Some of the artists might be there, and others may decide to come on December’s First Friday opening instead,” she says. She’s talking about this month’s Sense of Place group landscape exhibit. “It’s all really good work. The thing about it is that the grouping really shows a great overview of technique and gives you a strong feeling of the Midwest, in its expansiveness and in the expansiveness of the sky. And Mary Sprague has some beautiful drawings of things like utility poles.” Joyce Jablonski will exhibit a separate show of tile work. “They’re porcelain, and they’ve been done partially here and partially in China, and they have a whole vocabulary of forms and ideas that’s really interesting,” Leedy says. Tonight’s opening reception is 7–9 p.m.; both exhibits are on display through December 27.
