Adult
Adult‘s intimidating eccentric electro-punk plays like the soundtrack to that oft-staged movie scene in which a strait-laced, sheltered character must navigate a freaky nightclub due to some plot contrivance. (A few songs into this show, concertgoers familiar with Martin Scorsese’s After Hours will be surprised that they didn’t have to submit to a bizarre haircut at the door.) The Detroit duo’s guitars sound as though metallic fingers are scraping the strings, and its bass lines throb like a horror-movie villain’s inextinguishable pulse. The percussive clatter can make dancing difficult, but Nicola Kuperus’ ominous vocals (You best be careful) convey the impression that you’ll face unspeakable consequences if you don’t keep moving.
