Eat This Now: Nutter Butter-inspired cookies at Broadway Butcher Shop

A mutual of mine, artist Jared Horman, recommended these Nutter Butter-inspired cookies from Broadway Butcher Shop, and I don’t know which aspect caught my attention more: the uncommon cookie style or the fact that these came from a butcher shop. Regardless, I had to try.

I scheduled this specific visit to align with Horman’s work on the new storefront mural. What was once a basic off-white exterior now has eye-catching orange stripes, the Broadway Butcher Shop logo and name, and even lettering on the side of the building designed for the pedestrian perspective.  Horman collaborated on the design with the butcher shop team to earn a street beautification grant proposal from Midtown KC Now. According to Horman, the grants match up to $2,500 for storefront improvements on Broadway Blvd. and up to $5,000 on Main Street.

And now that the exterior has grabbed your attention, it’s time for Broadway Butcher to satisfy.

Just like an original Nutter Butter cookie, these are oblong, crunchy sandwich cookies filled with a sweet peanut butter filling.

However, the larger size and fluffier filling level these up when compared to the big brand. The cookie part is slightly softer than the Nabisco version—more of a crunch than a snap, and the peanut butter cream is heavenly. Light, sweet but still peanut-buttery, and soft enough to smoosh out from the edges a little with each bite.

Paired with hot tea on a fall afternoon, it was love. And for good reason: These cookies came from expert hands. In the kitchen space across the meat and cheese counter, Anna Morrow, former pastry chef at Cafe Europa, had just made the cookies earlier that day.

I’ll also note that the cheese case drew my attention, and I purchased a chunk of parmesan. Served with Granny Smith apples, pretzels, and smoked gouda for a casual dinner at home, this parmesan was excellent. It was slightly crumbly, barely dry, with a gentle umami.

The box of five cookies lasted longer than I expected (five days), but only because I did that thing where you precious-ize something, saving it for the right moment when you think it will be most deserving.

I’m actively trying not to do that… so here’s a reminder to anyone else holding back life’s little pleasures: open the good bottle of wine with your pizza takeout, burn the expensive candle even if no one is visiting, add the good chili oil to your average Tuesday breakfast. There’s no time like the present, so give yourself one.

These tend to sell out, so I recommend calling ahead to check their inventory. However, there are plenty of other gourmet pleasures to enjoy there if you arrive to find the cookies are sold out.

Broadway Butcher Shop is at 3820 Broadway Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64111.
