Eat This Now: Veggie chili pepper wontons at Blue Koi

Finding a filling, tasty vegetarian meal can be difficult, especially in a city where barbecue reigns supreme. I needed something packed with nutrition and flavor before an action-packed girls’ night out, and thus, my friend and I ended up at Blue Koi.

In the burgeoning area of Mission Farms, Blue Koi sits on a corner facing the street, with a bright blue door leading you inside. We were led to a table in the back corner near the outdoor patio, and our server handed us menus, something I definitely did not need as I always order the same dish: the steamed veggie chili pepper wontons ($14).

Served in a dish with spring onions, copious amounts of cilantro, and dumpling sauce, Blue Koi’s chili pepper wontons are an all-time favorite meal of mine. The filling is savory, and the sauce is salty, creating the perfect combo. If meat is more your thing, these wontons are available filled with pork, shrimp, and chicken.

My favorite part of the meal is the spice. It isn’t all-consuming, but it does offer a kick and a slight lip-plumping effect. We paired these dumplings with two martinis. My friend ordered the mango martini ($10), and I ordered the pometini ($10), a sweet pomegranate flavor with a kick of vodka.

To further treat ourselves, we shared the cheesecake wontons (4 for $12). Served on a plate with a peach compote, this dessert had my mouth watering the second our server placed it on the table. The crunchiness of the wonton plays well with the creamy inside. It offers a great spin on a classic dessert. We left feeling satiated and satisfied, which is why Blue Koi stays on my mind.

Blue Koi is at 10581 Mission Rd, Leawood, KS 66206.
