Eat This Now: Reuben sandwich at Scimeca’s Deli

As summer draws near and the pool covers are pulled back, one thing that will surely return to my meal rotation is a good sandwich and chips. I show love to all sandwiches, however, deep down there are a select few that hold a special place in my heart—the Reuben being one of them.

I made the trip up North to Scimeca’s—a family-run deli that has been serving the Kansas City area since 1935. Their L-shaped ordering stations made for a smooth ordering experience. After putting in your order at the back of the dining room, move to the right where you can pick your drink before going to the register to pay. As recommended, I tried the Reuben with BBQ chips ($11.95).

Each bite reminded me why the Reuben is firmly in my category of elite sandwiches.

The umami of the corned beef and melted Swiss cheese made for a great base that was complemented well by the tang and creaminess of the sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. I came for the ingredients, but I ended up staying for the bread. The rye bread used for this sandwich was incredibly fresh and flavorful, so much so that it stuck out to me the most about this experience.

After getting a taste for myself, it’s no surprise that after almost 100 years, Scimeca’s continues to thrive in the Kansas City deli scene. A delicious Reuben, excellent service, and an extensive selection of sandwiches, sides, and drinks make Scimeca’s a spot that I will be visiting again soon.

Scimeca’s Deli is at 1611 Swift St, North Kansas City, MO 64116.
