Best of KC 2025: MO Supreme Court saves Missouri weed-consumers millions each month
Earlier this month, we published The Pitch’s annual Best of Kansas City issue. You can take a peek at the results of the readers’ poll here. The issue also included a list, compiled and written by our editorial staff, of some local people, places, and things that we thought clearly won 2025. We’ll be publishing these items online throughout November.
Since October 2023, Missouri cannabis consumers have been taxed double the amount that the law intended when voters passed legal recreational cannabis in the state. The Missouri Constitution permits municipalities to implement a 3% sales tax on all recreational cannabis products. Where municipalities were not implementing the 3%, the county could then do so. But, somewhere along the lines, wires were crossed, and both municipalities and counties were taxing 3%, leading to consumers paying an overall 6% sales tax.
On July 22, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled 6-1 to end the double-stacking taxes. In turn, Missourians are set to save a total of $3 million per month, according to the Missouri Cannabis Trade Association (MoCannTrade).
Nearly two years later, cannabis users in the Show-Me State can finally save the extra pocket change when they head to the dispensary to purchase products.
