Earlier this month, we published The Pitch’s annual Best of Kansas City issue. You can take a peek at the results of the readers’ poll here. The issue also included a list, compiled and written by our editorial staff, of some local people, places, and things that we thought clearly won 2025. We’ll be publishing these items online throughout November.

As Mike Shorey’s voice belts out the chorus of “Can’t Let You Go”, the distinctive bongos of The Gap Band’s “Outstanding” bleed into the track before seamlessly transitioning to the warm vocals of Charlie Wilson. Behind the scenes, rhythmically turning dials, shifting sliders, and tapping the soundboard is a DJ whose identity is well-known despite his enigmatic, faceless persona.

Dressed in Made Mobb gear and donning a vibrant Lucha Libre mask, DJ FK Menace is the mastermind behind the ‘On The Couch’ series. The concept is simple: Once a month, he takes over Third Place Lounge, sets up his turntables on a coffee table, and spins his set from the comfort of a couch. Each installment features a guest DJ who performs their set in the same laid-back style.

Third Place Lounge is the perfect venue for this event. Its array of living room-style furniture creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere that complements the leisurely vibe of On The Couch. The lounge also boasts a diverse cocktail menu, alongside a full selection of non-alcoholic mocktails to suit all tastes.

In a city with a thriving arts scene, On The Couch shines as a unique experience. With a lineup of skilled DJs, the intimate setting of Third Place Lounge, and a food truck on standby, the event fosters a welcoming environment for people from all walks of life. Attendees can expect a rich tapestry of sounds, centered around R&B, Latin, and hip-hop.
