I was first introduced to Mike Silverman’s one-man band project That 1 Guy in 2009, two years after his breakthrough album, The Moon Is Disgusting. I was elated to see him live for the first time at recordBar in Kansas City last night, where he turned the stage into his own playground of sound and magic. Armed with his towering homemade instrument, the Magic Pipe, he built beats, basslines, and samples live, showing the crowd exactly what each button and trigger did before launching into a wild EDM-meets-funk set.

Midway through, he dropped into a guttural bout of throat singing during “Whale Race,” blending organic resonance with deep electronic pulses.

His crowd work was flawless. From a hilarious “No, thank YOU” back-and-forth with the audience to declaring, “The stars have aligned,” with his arms sprawled to the sky when I caught the perfect photo of his puppet opening his mouth.

At one point he quipped, “Anyway, here’s ‘Wonderwall,’” accidentally sang the first line, then abruptly pivoted into “Butt Machine,” sending the room into controlled chaos. Every moment felt spontaneous yet precise. That 1 Guy is a masterclass in one-man showmanship. By the end, everyone was sweaty, laughing, and amazed. That 1 Guy didn’t just play a concert; he built a universe out of pipes, loops, and pure charisma.
