KC Sipps: Three new eateries, 50 years of Mr. D’s, and $1 cold brew

This week's Kansas City restaurant news.

Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.

That’s where I come in.

I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!

Something New

News Bites: The buzzy new downtown steakhouse from Noble 33, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce announced an opening date. 1587 Prime is set to open on September 17, and reservations became available yesterday but quickly ran out. Using the restaurant’s reservation platform, hopeful diners can submit a reservation request for the desired date(s) and possibly score a spot as others cancel or adjust existing reservations. The menu and prices have not been released, but I took a tour and gleaned some insight earlier this summer.

Bizz & Weezy Confections is celebrating 10 years of creative candies (plus coffee, burgers, and more). All month long, customers can take advantage of 12oz cold brew for only $1, and this week (August 18-23), all pastries are half-price!

Calling all bookish, Maasverse, or Empyrean stans! Dolce Bakery in Prairie Village has a special romantasy-themed menu of cookies, cakes, and beverages this week only. The playful bakery draws inspiration from the Night Court and more for this set of goodies, and I went out of my way to visit yesterday. I snagged three cookies ($4.50 each) to represent two of my favorite books: A Court of Silver Flames, and the Throne of Glass series.

Opening

The Baker’s Table: A new bakery in Parkville opens today. The bakery offers made-from-scratch breads, pastries, cinnamon rolls, soups, and more, but expect the menu to be limited as it ramps up production. It will be open Thursdays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Neighbors Coffee: A new cafe and coffee roaster has opened its doors in the Marlborough neighborhood. Neighbors is a non-profit coffee company that is publicly committed to employing those aging out of foster care. It is open until 2 p.m. every day, but closed Tuesdays.

Akoya Omakase: Located in the same building as Hotel Phillips, Akoya Omakase is now accepting reservations for its soft opening phase. To help build momentum, the restaurant is offering a 25% discount on dinner with a reservation made and used by August 30.

August 22

Brewer’s Corner: Pour it Forward, a two-day event benefitting Open Doors Foundation, kicks off at the newly reopened Brewer’s Corner. Tickets for entry are $25 and include one drink and live music. Brewer’s Kitchen & Corner shuttered earlier this year as the owners bought 3 Trails Brewing in Independence and moved, but Brewer’s Corner has reopened under new ownership with cozy updates to the space.

Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium: Another one of the rare opportunities to enjoy the zoo with wine, food trucks, and no children! Wine Walk for Wildlife tickets are $55 for non-members, and include live music throughout the zoo, tastings of 40+ wines, and access to 13 food trucks. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium and its Conservation Fund.

August 24

Mr. D’s Donuts: The third annual Donut Con is happening at Mr. D’s Donut Shop in Shawnee from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. This free event celebrates 50 years of Mr. D’s, and includes kids’ activities, special edition donuts, a donut-eating contest, and local vendors. The donut shop is small for an event like this, but the former Pathlight Brewing space next door will be available for overflow. I think Mr. D’s does the best blueberry cake donut in town!
