Premiere: Thimastr’s ‘Nude Thigh’ decries conformity while making you shake your ass
It’s been over five years since Lawrence’s Thimastr dropped their debut album, Between The Knees And Squeeze, via High Dive Records. In the intervening time, there’s been some lineup changes, along with changing the spelling of the band’s name, but the group’s dreamily surfy indie rock has remained gloriously great the entire time.
The band’s latest, Muscle Memories, will release on compact disc and cassette from High Dive on Friday, September 26, but we’re lucky to premiere the album’s first single, “Nude Thigh,” right here and now. The track is a winner on the basis of its insistent guitar and attendantly tenacious drums alone, but handclaps and vocal harmonies bring this to the next level, leaving you eager for more as it abruptly ends. Check it out below.
Says the band of “Nude Thigh”:
“Well, on our first album we had been attempting to start a cult based around the practices of popular 1980s workout heroes such as Richard Simmons and Suzanne Somers. However, we decided to go in a different direction because we realized that people don’t want their belief systems to be sweaty. So, this album is quite a thematic departure from our earlier material, though there are still a few nods to the aerobics culture of a bygone era.
‘Nude Thigh’ is a tone poem meant to move your bod. It’s about recognizing the dangers of group think, and the importance of maintaining individuality in a world that demands conformity. Make sure you learn the synchronized dance to this song for our next show! It’s mandatory!”
Thimastr plays the Replay Lounge on Sunday, August 31, with Pearl & the Oysters and Shy Boys. Details on that show here.
