Every year since 1982, countless pitmasters fire up their smokers and compete in the annual Great Lenexa BBQ Battle, the largest barbecue championship in Kansas. In 1984, Governor John Carlin declared the event the Kansas State Championship, and it has drawn more and more participants since.

As the 43rd annual championship takes place this Friday and Saturday at the Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, up to 176 teams will compete for the title of Grand Champion. Pitmasters compete in seven different categories: brisket, pork, pork ribs, chicken, sausage, beef steak, and miscellaneous.

On Friday night from 4:30 to 11:30 p.m., the barbecue teams will host private parties, but with a $5 entry fee, the public can soak up the smoky aromas, enjoy live music, check out kids’ activities, and grab food and drinks from the concession area.

Friday is the calm before the storm, as Saturday is competition day. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., teams will focus on perfecting their meats. The day is dedicated to competition, but attendees are free to stroll the park at no cost.

With the help of Lenexa Parks & Recreation and the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the battle has grown over the years. What originally began as 12 teams, 12 judges, and no prize money, the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle now draws 150–200 teams with a prize of $3,000. Awards are given to the top 10 contestants in seven categories, but there can only be one Grand Champion.
