The Get Up Kids
Here’s what you can expect at the Get Up Kids’ homecoming show at RecordBar, part of the band’s 20th anniversary tour: lots of ’90s throwbacks, lead singer Matt Pryor’s charm, a crowd that will make you feel like you’ve time-traveled in a DeLorean. Oh, and Berwanger, led by former Anniversary lead singer Josh Berwanger, opens the night with rock songs that sound as insta-classic as they come. This show is sold out, so perch yourself on the roof of your car in the parking lot, smoke a cigarette and let the nostalgia wash over you.
Monday, November 30, RecordBar (1020 Westport Rd., 816-753-5207)
Lights and the Mowgli’s
The synth is strong on Little Machines, the most recent release from Canadian singer-songwriter Valerie Poxleitner, who performs as Lights. The 27-year-old puts down vibe-y layers of smooth electro pop, the kind that makes dancing with strangers seem sensible. (Chances are, the Sunday after Turkey Day, you’re going to need some movement.) The Mowgli’s are also in this Midland show, visiting us from sunny California.

Duncan Burnett, Gee Watts, Clark Rooseveltte, the Carter Family
If you’re in the mood to sample some top-notch local hip-hop, look no further than Monday’s eclectic Riot Room bill. Duncan Burnett — who often performs with his live band, the Ministry — has a youthful energy, but what’s more impressive about his flow is the positive message that he blends with personal experience. (Think family-friendly but not preachy.) Gee Watts has a different kind of intensity, one we’re excited to hear more of when his forthcoming album, CaviART, drops in February. Clark Rooseveltte favors grooving, mellifluous samples for his raps, while the Carter Family helps you get down.

Silversun Pickups, Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls, Night Riots, and Radkey
The first night of the Buzz’s four-part Xmas concert series is heavy on rock. Silversun Pickups is touring in support of its recent full-length, Better Nature, an album that’s perhaps the band’s most approachable yet, with more hooks and a chilled-out volume. Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls is also boasting a new album this year, Positive Songs for Negative People, which recalls late-’90s emo swirled with folk. Night Riots is also on deck, supporting this year’s Howl. And Kansas City’s favorite trio of sons, Radkey, is back in town.
