KC Sipps: New all-day breakfast, custom custard by Eric Stonestreet, and four restaurant closures
This week's Kansas City restaurant news.
Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.
That’s where I come in.
I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!
Something New
News Bites: French Custard has a new, limited-time flavor in collaboration with Eric Stonestreet! From now through June 15, each purchase of the Be S’More Cherritable flavor means $1 is donated to Children’s Mercy. The special flavor is created by Eric and Lindsay Stonestreet, and features cherry compote, marshmallow meringue, and graham cracker crumbs in chocolate custard.
Opening
The Workss: Breakfast all day fans, hear ye! The Workss opened recently at 4242 Indiana Ave in KCMO, serving breakfast all day plus lunch and dinner specials seven days a week. Keep your eyes on their socials for the next soul food Sunday.
Cội Nguồn Origin: Another new northland spot, Cội Nguồn: Origin, a traditional Vietnamese coffeehouse, invites you to its soft opening from May 24-29. Between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. the staff will be working out the kinks of the first brick-and-mortar on N Oak Trafficway after a year of pop-ups.
Closing
Atomic Cowboy: The Westport location of Atomic Cowboy, Fat Sully’s, and Denver Biscuit Co. has closed after five years. This multiple-concepts-in-one restaurant based in Denver served its last giant slice of ‘za this weekend. The Overland Park location remains open. This had me a little bummed, but I’ll still swing by the OP one to pick up gameday pizza and chicken tendies… a real crowd-pleaser in my family!
Seasons 52: The restaurant chain that also owns Olive Garden and Eddie V’s has closed the Plaza location of Seasons 52. As of Monday, the location was no longer open after more than a decade in KC.
Danny Edwards Blvd BBQ: The KC barbeque spot on Southwest Blvd will close at the end of the month due to the building being sold, according to the KC Star. Danny Edwards BBQ dishes may be available in the future via food truck or catering, but for now, take your chance over the next few days to stop in for one last visit.
South of Summit Taqueria & Tequila: A Waldo taco spot, South of Summit, has announced that it will close on May 31. The restaurant group also owns Third Street Social, Boru, and more, and may open a new concept in the SoS space.
May 24
Island Fest: Independence, MO may be landlocked, but this weekend is Island Fest time. The free festival includes traditional performances representing Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, and more, plus food and drink vendors and additional activities. The festival is held at Independence Square from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Plan ahead
Vintage ‘78 Wine Bar: Should we make Tannin Tuesday a thing? Vintage ‘78 Wine Bar in Overland Park is hosting a wine bash on Tuesday, May 27. The team will be pouring from their own collection, and invite you to share yours. Tickets are $150, or $100 if you bring a bottle to share. Cheese and charcuterie will be served along side stories, wine education, and the type of merriment and connection wine provides.
Culinaria: On June 5, Just Food is hosting another benefit dinner as part of the Fond Dinner Series. This time, at Culinaria in Lawrence, Chef Aaron Pillar, will present a meal with nods to fond memories of childhood, crafting elevated versions of nostalgic dishes. The meal, at $300 for two, directly benefits individuals in Douglas County experiencing food insecurity through Just Food’s services. These dinners sell out quickly!
